Our Recent Sri Lanka Journey: Colombo, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella & Yala

Sri Lanka is a destination where every part of the journey feels different. On our recent trip, we travelled through some of the island's most memorable destinations, starting from the vibrant streets of Colombo and ending in the wild landscapes of Yala.

Our route took us through Colombo → Sigiriya → Kandy → Nuwara Eliya → Ella → Yala, giving us a wonderful mix of history, culture, mountains, tea plantations, scenic landscapes and wildlife.

Colombo: The Beginning of Our Journey

Our Sri Lankan adventure began in Colombo, the country's commercial capital.

Colombo gave us our first glimpse of Sri Lankan life, with its busy streets, modern buildings, local markets, restaurants and coastal atmosphere.

After spending time exploring the city, we started our journey towards the cultural and historical heart of the island.

Sigiriya: Ancient History in the Heart of Sri Lanka

Our next destination was Sigiriya, home to the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress.

The enormous rock rising above the surrounding greenery is one of Sri Lanka's most recognizable landmarks. The ancient fortress, gardens and surrounding landscape make Sigiriya a fascinating place to explore.

Standing beneath the massive rock and looking across the surrounding countryside was one of the highlights of our trip.

Sigiriya was more than just a sightseeing stop. It gave us a glimpse into Sri Lanka's ancient civilization and the remarkable engineering and architecture of its past.

Kandy: Culture, Heritage & Tradition

From Sigiriya, we continued to Kandy, one of Sri Lanka's most important cultural destinations.

Surrounded by green hills, Kandy has a completely different atmosphere. The city is famous for its cultural heritage and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, an important religious and cultural site.

We enjoyed exploring the city, experiencing its local atmosphere and taking in the beautiful hills surrounding Kandy.

Nuwara Eliya: Into Sri Lanka's Tea Country

Our journey then continued towards Nuwara Eliya, where the landscape changed dramatically.

The warm lowlands gave way to cool mountain air, winding roads, misty hills and endless tea plantations.

Nuwara Eliya is famous for its tea-growing region, and travelling through the surrounding countryside was one of the most scenic parts of our journey.

The green tea estates stretching across the hills made almost every viewpoint feel like a postcard.

Ella: Mountains, Views & Adventure

From Nuwara Eliya, we travelled onwards to Ella.

Ella is surrounded by mountains, forests and tea plantations, making it one of the most scenic destinations in Sri Lanka.

The journey itself was a big part of the experience. The winding mountain roads opened up to beautiful views of valleys and green hills.

Ella's relaxed atmosphere, natural scenery and famous viewpoints made it a memorable stop on our journey.

Yala: Into the Wild

Our final major destination was Yala, where the landscape changed once again.

After travelling through cities, ancient sites and mountain country, we entered Sri Lanka's wildlife region.

Yala National Park is famous for its diverse wildlife and natural landscapes. A safari here offers the opportunity to experience Sri Lanka's wilderness and see animals in their natural environment.

Ending our journey in Yala was the perfect change of pace after exploring the mountains and cultural destinations.

Six Destinations, One Unforgettable Journey

Our Sri Lanka route covered an incredible variety of experiences:

Colombo — City life and coastal atmosphere Sigiriya — Ancient history and iconic landscapes Kandy — Culture and heritage Nuwara Eliya — Tea plantations and mountain scenery Ella — Hills, viewpoints and nature Yala — Wildlife and adventure

What made this journey special was the contrast between every destination. Within one trip, we experienced busy city streets, ancient heritage, peaceful mountains, endless tea estates and the wild landscapes of Yala.

Sri Lanka may be a relatively compact island, but the variety of experiences it offers is remarkable.

Our Sri Lanka Story

From the moment we arrived in Colombo until our final experiences in Yala, every destination added something different to our journey.

The roads between the destinations were just as memorable as the places themselves. Green landscapes, mountain roads, local villages and changing scenery made the journey an experience in itself.

Colombo → Sigiriya → Kandy → Nuwara Eliya → Ella → Yala

Six destinations. One incredible journey. Countless memories.
